Baltimore/Washington D.C. based ABET needed a conference and symposium video. Their audience of leaders in higher education expected high-end storytelling. The film needed to generate enthusiasm for the keynote and beyond. So the story needed to feel "big".
First we worked with ABET's Creative Director and leadership on story, creating outlines and scripts with various approaches. Together, we found a way to tell their story that was attention-getting, exciting, and unique. There were technical considerations, too. For instance, some of the places the film would play wouldn't have sound capabilities, so we worked hard so that the visual storytelling could stand alone. Also, the video had to be created to non-standard projection aspect ratios to fit the venue.
Then, we created the video. We use Pixar's iterative animatic approach. We start with the story, using placeholders to help us set the tone and make sure every beat of the story was getting the attention it deserved. Then, we moved to VFX and 3D animation. For this film, every shot was a visual effects (VFX) shot. We performed 3D camera tracking and 3D object insertion that ranged from text to a fully 3D animated International Space Station. We did compositing in Nuke and edit/sound mix/color work in DaVinci for finishing.
Throughout the project we maintained solid communication with ABET and shared iterative versions of the film as it came together. This saved a lot of time, especially when a couple of minor last-minute changes were needed. Solid communication also helped build trust, which really helped us all work together to create something special.
Our film, titled "Lifelong Learning" helped kick-off the event at the San Diego California Convention Center. The video played as you entered the theater and again onstage to introduce the keynote speaker. It was a big success and a lot of fun for us to create. We're looking forward to future collaborations with ABET.
As a nonprofit, we needed a high-quality video without the budget for a big production—and Patrick delivered above and beyond. He was professional, thoughtful, and truly took the time to understand our audience and mission. The video, themed around lifelong learning, beautifully incorporated diverse representations and will be a lasting asset for us. His communication was prompt and organized, timelines were met (and even exceeded), and the final product speaks for itself. We’re so grateful for his partnership and highly recommend him to any organization looking for exceptional work with heart. - Amanda Taylor, PhD, Senior Director of Global Communication & Marketing for ABET.
